cooperative
Dave: Now Margo, you mentioned a newsletter, what is that all about? Margo: Yes, Dave. I love to tell people about my cooperative. I am the founder of a group that is based on the idea of buying nothing. Samantha: That’s impossible, nobody can live without buying anything. Margo: I promise you that it is possible. In these days, it is easier than ever to not buy anything. Keith: So, how do you get the things you need? What about groceries?
Episode 9: Shopping
Day to Day with Dave
barter
Margo: The food products that the group needs are all farmed locally. We have meat producers, and vegetable farmers in the group, as well as bakers and butchers. We barter and trade our products and make sure everyone gets the food they need. Keith: Well, that works for food, but what about clothing and toiletries? Margo: That’s easy, Keith. There are so many articles of clothing that are already made, that we don’t need to ever make any new clothes. People donate the clothes they don’t need. We pass them around in the group.

freecycle
Samantha: Plus, there are all sorts of freecycle sites online, where people give away all sorts of things. Margo: That’s right. Often you just have to go and pick them up. When a lady moved here from the south, she was able to decorate her entire house with items that were offered for free. Somebody even got an old car donated to them through the group. Keith: But what about products that you have to buy? Like shampoo or soaps? Margo: The only thing I can tell you, Keith, is that you never have to buy anything.

artisanal
Margo: We have a few people who make artisanal soap, and let me tell you, this same soap can be used to wash your clothes, hair and body. It’s a marketing gimmick to think you need to buy so many different products.Keith: Don’t you worry about the economy? If nobody bought anything, the economy would completely fall apart. Margo: I worry much more about the environment than about the economy, Keith. Dave: Well, this episode has certainly been interesting. I have learned a lot about new ways of shopping. Thanks for listening. See you tomorrow!
