Individual

  • Piaget proposes that young adults move into a cognitive development stage known as postformal thought. Postformal thought is contextual, provision, realistic, and recognized to be influenced by emotions.
Is all cognition in adulthood postformal thinking? What factor influence if it is or is not?

When are you actually an adult?

Macrosystem

  • largely revolves around cultures, attitudes, and ideologies.
  • e.g.,
    • cultures, history, laws, economic systems, politics, etc.
    • growing up in United States vs. France

Microsystem

  • Erikson proposed that Intimacy vs. Isolation is the key developmental issue in early adulthood.

Under this thinking, does having fatuous love fulfill this developmental desire? Why or why not?

Once we have established this, we can discuss...

Macrosystem

  • Sexual orientation is an important part of identity that is solidified in this stage of development (if not already).
How might living in a state like Florida compare to living in California for LGBTQIA+ populations? different countries? Can we mitigate negative impacts of the macrosystem on the individual?

Did you know the US Department of State has travel considerations to other countries for LGBTQIA+ populations?

Chronosystem

  • considers patterning of environmental events and transitions over the life course OR sociohistorical circumstances.
  • e.g.,
    • shortly after life stressors such as divorce.
    • living now vs. 1960s

Individual

  • psychology; science about the human mind and behavior.
  • includes biological influences and congnitive factors.
  • e.g.,
    • epigenetic contributors, coping, psychological well-being/tools, etc.

Chronosystem

  • Emerging adulthood is characterized by a lot of experimentation and exploration for identity development.

How might emerging adults now experience exploration differently that in the past? Is this good or bad?

Knowledge Check!

Microsystem

  • includes setting in which the individual lives.
  • e.g.,
    • family, peers, school, church, neighborhood, etc.

Exosystem

  • includes links between a social setting in which the individual does not have an active role.
  • e.g.,
    • mass media, SES (in childhood), goverment agencies, etc.
    • parent's job or education status may not directly influence a child but influence the environment the parent introduces a child to.

Exosystem

  • Approximately 70% of adult do NOT get sufficient sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation is tied to cardiovascular disease, increased mortality, cognitive impairments that increase motor-vehicle or work-related accidents, among other outcomes.

What factors at the exosystem level contribute to adult's sleep deprivation? How would you intervene at this level to improve sleep?

Let think about this...

Mesosytem

  • Research has shown that religiousity predicts the likelihood of divorce. Additionally, children of parents with religious-based views of divorce are likely to hold these views even if they do not share their religious involvement.
Why might views on divorce remain even if the religion involvement is not shared?

Knowledge Check!

Mesosytem

  • includes relationship between microsystems OR other levels.
  • e.g.,
    • Growing up Muslim in a predominantely Christian neighborhood.
