What will happen if global warming continues?
The greenhouse effect also protects us from dangerous solar radiation. Radiation from the sun is incredibly harmful to humans and can cause skin cancers and eye problems. One of the greenhouse gases, called ozone, plays an integral role in
blocking solar radiation. In the 1980s scientists discovered that many popular products contained chlorofluorocarbons, which were destroying the ozone layer.
integral
stop the production of many aerosol products, like hairspray or scented room sprays. Chlorofluorocarbons are now prohibited and the ozone layer is recuperating nicely.
Without this important layer of the atmosphere and the greenhouse gas called ozone, humans would have had a very serious increase in solar radiation. A widespread campaign was put into place to
aerosol
People have already noticed that each summer seems hotter than the last. This increase can cause more heat-related illnesses and possibly deaths.
So, I’ve told you some of the benefits of the greenhouse effect, but let’s not forget that there are still enormous problems that could occur if global warming continues. To begin with, the temperature on earth will get hotter.
noticed
Deserts are expanding because of these droughts. This makes less land available for growing food. People are threatened with having a shortage of both food and water.
A hotter world makes it more difficult to work and move around. Water evaporates more quickly and this contributes to water shortages and droughts.
drought
This means that many coastal or island communities could suffer greatly or be destroyed. The ocean also absorbs the extra carbon dioxide which endangers marine life.
In addition to droughts, severe storms and wildfires are more abundant and can cause flooding, landslides and destruction. When the polar ice caps melt, this unfrozen water causes the ocean to become warmer and also higher.
abundant
This means animals may have to look for a new habitat that can provide the food they need. Animals are also forced to adapt to a new rhythm of the changing seasons, which affects migration and hibernation. Some animal species may be able to relocate and adapt to these changes, but some will not.
Another very serious problem caused by global warming is the loss of plant and animal species. As temperatures rise, the habitats of flora and fauna change. Many plants are unable to thrive in hotter conditions and suffer from the lack of water. Animals are then faced with a loss of food sources.
