New Horizons
“Dr, Pooshwa, over here.” The head of the entire Mars operation motioned for Dr. Pooshwa to follow her. “I want to show you where you’ll be working. This is Dr. Cranden. He’s been here for five years already.” A thin, middle aged man with long, curly hair pulled into a ponytail stepped forward. “I am so excited to see what you brought with you. Look at this space we have. The scientists stepped into a huge room that was enclosed with thick plastic.
composition
“These etrees have been growing for four years,” Dr. Cranden stated. He led his partner to the side of the room. “The room has an exhaust system right above these trees. Once a day, we open the system and let the oxygen that the plants have created out into the atmosphere. Our goal is to make this system large enough to change the composition of the atmosphere. The etrees you have brought are smaller, but more advanced. They will increase the output of oxygen by 300 percent."
permeable
Dr. Pooshwa raised her eyebrows and surveyed the room. “That’s a huge job,” she said with a sigh. “Yes, but this project is just beginning. We have plans to build four more rooms like this one and then the whole area will be enclosed by a dome. The dome will be permeable, so we can control the flow of the different gases into and out of the environment. It’s a very long-term project.” Two of the scientists who arrived today have already begun building the dome.
scope
“I know that the head of the mission wants us to have the first dome in place in 10 years, so that people can begin to settle here,” Dr. Pooshwa stated. “I’m not sure we can work that fast.” “Don’t forget that we’ve already got 45 people working up here now,” Dr. Cranden assured her. “Another group should be arriving in a month and the scope of the project will just keep getting bigger and bigger. “Let’s get started then,” Dr. Pooshwa smiled.”I’ll program the conveyor robots to bring all the boxes in here.
Create an environment where people can come to live
Increase the number of scientists on Mars.
Raise animals and grow plants on Mars
Grow enough etrees to create a forest
So that the scientists can finish their project.
So that the people who live on Mars can have more air.
So that the scientists can create more nitrogen
So that the scientists can control the flow of gases.
They will increase the production of carbon dioxide
They are more advanced.
They will increase the production of oxygen.
They are bigger.
Five years
Since he was five.
Ten years
His whole life
What is the ultimate goal of the project on Mars?
Why does the dome need to be permeable?
Which is not true about the new etrees?
How long has Dr. Cranden been on Mars?
