What are the positive aspects to electing a leader?

Governments

legislation
A democracy is a type of government in which the people have the authority to decide how they would like their government to run. There are two main types of democracies. A direct democracy allows the people to directly vote on all new laws and legislation. A representative democracy means the citizens vote for the officials who decide the laws.

Governments

majority
The cornerstones of democracy assure that the people have rights, responsibilities and equality under the law. The most common form of democracy today is a representative democracy, and most of the decision making is done as a majority rule, meaning that the side with the most votes wins the election. However, there are many different ways that democracies function, and no country is exactly the same.

Governments

biased
In order for a democracy to function, a country needs to have at least two legitimate political parties, transparent elections and a base of citizens that is involved in the choices and willing to vote. Often democracies face criticism because the decisions are not transparent, or people are influenced by a biased media.

Governments

standard
Historically, democracies are rather rare. Most old civilizations used monarchies or systems where people were appointed to govern based on their wealth, social status and connections. Only in the past few centuries have democracies become the standard for providing a safe, stable government. Currently more than half of the countries in the world operate in some form of democracy.
