How do you think a good king would act?
Prereading
capacity
Adelle found her brother sitting alone on his throne with his head hanging down. He looked up at her and sighed. “I need help. Everything is awful.”
Three months into his rule, Arthur had the main jail completely full and the three smaller jails also at capacity. He didn’t have enough food to feed the prisoners and there was civil unrest across the realm. All of the peasants were starving while the lords ate all the meat and vegetables produced on their land.
Poor King Arthur
berate
Adelle gave her brother a comforting hug instead of an angry bellow. “The peasants are moving toward the castle,” Arthur told his sister. “I fear they are going to mount a violent revolution. What can I do?”
Adelle nodded. She wanted to berate her brother for making such bad decisions at the beginning of his rule, but yelling at him wouldn’t help solve any of their problems. Arthur had been walking around the castle, muttering to himself and shaking his head. He wasn’t sleeping and he was worried every day that the peasants would revolt.
Poor King Arthur

People can’t pay you unless they actually make some profit. Let the peasants hunt this season. One animal a week so they can feed their families and have the strength to plant their crops.”
“First of all,” Adelle said. “You need to let all of the people out of jail. Send them back to their homes with enough bread for their families and let them start working in the fields again. Stop trying to collect taxes this year. Twenty percent of nothing is nothing.
Poor King Arthur
flexible
Suddenly Arthur stood up. “Wait a minute. I am the king! I get to make the rules. My new rule is that women can be the monarch. You should have taken over when father died. You are so much wiser and more logical than I am. That’s the last decision I make. Adelle is the new queen!”
“You sound so certain,” Arthur shrugged. “How do you know what to do?” “It’s true that a king must be strong, but he must also be flexible and make decisions to show his subjects that he cares about them.” “I wish you could be king,” Arthur moaned. “You would be so much better at it than me.”
