Why are so many cities built near rivers?

Ponds are other bodies of freshwater found on earth. A pond is simply a small lake. They are usually not big enough for boating, but could be a place for fishing or swimming. Ponds often have lots of vegetation, and are full of water plants and flowers. People often create ponds in their backyards or gardens to add beauty and give birds and animals a place to drink.

Wetlands are places where the land is covered by water almost permanently. Two types of wetlands are swamps and marshes. A swamp is a forest that is covered in water.The water is generally quite shallow and contains many of the dead, decaying plants and trees. A marsh is similar to a swamp, but it contains green plants, with no woody stems. Trees are an example of a plant with a wood stem. Marshes are often found next to lakes or streams, where the water has moved over the land.

Another type of water feature is running water, or water that flows from one place to another. The most well-known is a river. A river occurs when water follows a path and flows downhill due to gravity. Rivers can be wide and deep or shallow and slow. Many large rivers are used for freight transportation, and barges carry heavy goods down the river.

Rivers are fascinating, because they can flow such a long distance and have an interconnected system. Rivers have a source, or a place where they begin. The source is often found in higher land, like a mountain. Sometimes the source comes from a natural spring, which is a place where underground water appears above ground. Smaller rivers from many sources can eventually combine to form a large river. This large river can also branch into smaller rivers

The longest river in the world, the Amazon River, runs from from west to east across almost the entire continent of South America. There are many sources, most of them found in the tops of the Andes River in Peru. This river has three outlets where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. For most of its course, the river flows through the Amazon rainforest.

Eventually all rivers will change the land that they cover. The Grand Canyon is an example where the river ran through layers of rocks. The rocks were eroded by the water, and the water formed a path at the bottom of a huge canyon. All water in rivers will also eventually flow into a sea or ocean. Throughout history, rivers have played an important role in determining where to build cities in order to have fresh water.
