Prereading
incline
Yugi didn’t sleep much, so as soon as the sun appeared, she set off again. She walked quickly, trying to get her blood pumping so she could warm up. The land started to incline steadily uphill, and she was forced to crawl to make it up the dunes. The wind increased and blew sand in her face. She kept walking toward the looming landform above her.
Abandoned
battered
Slowly she began to see life. There were scrubby plants, hanging on to the poor soil and getting battered in the wind. The scrubby plants soon got bigger and darker, and Yugi thought she could see another line of bushes in the distance. She picked up her pace and found the thinnest, shallowest body of water she had ever seen. The tiny creek trickled slowly north. Yugi dipped her fingers into the water and wiped them on her sunburned face.
rejuvenated
There wasn’t enough water to even fill her water pouch, but Yugi was rejuvenated just from seeing the creek. She was very close to the base of the mountains and needed to figure out how to go over them. She scanned the base of the mountain and thought that she saw movement to one side. She stood on tiptoes, but still couldn’t see clearly. She moved toward the movement and soon recognized the dark red shawl her mother wore.
clutched
“Mom!” she called out and started running. Her mother looked up and then clutched her hands together in surprise. The women ran toward each other and embraced in the sand. “Why are you still here?” Yugi said at the same time her mother cried out, “You made it!” Her mother laughed, “We have to wait for the snow to melt, right now we can’t make it through the pass.” Yugi shivered, remembering the night she had spent frozen on the desert sand. “I guess I should be grateful for the cold, since it allowed me to find you.”

Another type of water feature is running water, or water that flows from one place to another. The most well-known is a river. A river occurs when water follows a path and flows downhill due to gravity. Rivers can be wide and deep or shallow and slow. Many large rivers are used for freight transportation, and barges carry heavy goods down the river.
