What do you need to survive in the desert?
The next day Yugi noticed that the trees were no longer so dense. She kept walking with the sun to her back, until the trees had disappeared and all around her was a dark green plain. These plants offered little protection from the sun and soon Yugi needed to get out of the burning rays. In the distance, she could see a line of trees, winding back and forth through the low land.

There must be a river there, she thought, and turned south toward the water. The trees that grew near the river were different than the pines she had found in the forest. Yugi looked closer and found that they were fruit-bearing trees. She was just able to reach some of the lower branches and pull off apples and pears.

She rested a bit beneath the trees and then filled her bag with fruit and her water pouch with water. Then she set off again toward the west. The plain was not very wide, and by the end of the day, most of the grass had turned to hard rock and dirt. The next morning By noon, the desert surrounded Yugi. In the distance she could see the mountains towering over the expanse of sand.

She knew that she had to walk steadily west through the sand for two days. The first day wasn’t terrible. She was able to get liquid from the fruit and save most of her water. When the sun started to set, she kept walking directly toward it, until she couldn’t see anything at all. Once the sun disappeared, it got cold. She pulled her arms around her legs and buried herself in the sand.
