What would you do if you got lost in a forest?

Prereading

scavenge
It seemed like the forest went on forever. There were days that the trees were so dense that Yugi couldn’t even see the sun. On those days it was difficult to navigate. She tried to follow the course of the river, but on the third day, the river turned north, and she needed to continue west. She was lucky that she was familiar with the plants, so she could scavenge for berries to eat. She saw a lot of animals, but she didn’t know how to catch them.

Abandoned

sick
Yugi’s family had been forced to flee their village when the attackers came. Their destination was a small village next to the ocean, where many people had already escaped to. On the first day of the trip, Yugi had become very sick. She had a fever and a cough and she couldn’t maintain the rhythm of the group. The elders decided that for the good of the group, they would need to leave her behind.
invaders
Yugi passed four terrible, lonely, painful nights. She had no food and only a small pouch of water. One day she heard the invaders pass by, and hid herself in the mud, willing them not to see her. On the fifth day, Yugi woke up feeling better. She was hungry, thirsty, weak and tired, but she had made it. She gathered some food, filled her water pouch and set off after her family.
punishing
She knew the name of the village by the ocean. She also knew that she had to continue straight west, until she reached the mountains. Before she got to the mountains, she would have to pass through the forest, a wide plain and a punishing desert. Yugi hoped that since she was alone, she could travel quickly enough to catch up with her family and the rest of the group.
