Are you ever manipulated by something you hear?
Prereading
avid
When I was growing up, I was an avid fan of the radio. I liked that you could listen to stations in your area that played programs produced locally and relevant to your life. There were so many stations to choose from. You could listen to the news, and then hear commentary that was well-thought and intelligent. Many stations played sporting events, so you could pay attention to the games even while you were driving or cleaning.
dial
The radio also had a great selection of music stations. Every type of music had its own station, so you could choose what you wanted to hear, turn the dial and listen all day. Most music channels also offered a large block of time without advertising. Then at the end of that time, the advertisements were always for local stores, or events going on around you.
provoking
I have recently discovered podcasts, which while not the same as the radio, do offer an acceptable alternative. Podcasts are great because they are well-prepared and offer intelligent, thought-provoking discussions about certain topics. The content is well-researched and presented in a way that holds your interest and makes you want to investigate the topics further.
riddled with
Many podcasts are supported by grants or foundations that do research and want the public to be informed about the new information. Other podcasts are created simply because people feel passionate about a topic and want to share what they know. Right now, a podcast is one of the few places you can find entertainment that is not riddled with ads. I hope that in the future, podcasts do not become just another method of delivering advertisements.
