How do advertisements manipulate us?
Prereading
manipulate
I believe that the best way we can counteract the effect of all of the advertisements in our life, is to eliminate the reliance we have on technology. It is easy to manipulate us with ads, when we have become used to seeing them every time we want some entertainment. One of the things we can do is to attend events that are created by live people, instead of artificial intelligence or computer programmers.
authentic
For this reason, I love going to the theatre. Watching real, live people perform is a real treat in this digital age. You get to see real, authentic emotions being played out on a stage. The costumes are made of real cloth, the objects they hold are really right there in front of you, and the people are acting in real time. The building is usually decorated to show the setting of the story and advertising would be completely out of place.
miracle
The best thing about the theatre is that there is no room for advertisements. With real actors, the action cannot stop mid-scene so that someone can scream into your face about their new miracle product. Unfortunately, there is also no way to cut the action if an actor makes a mistake. Sometimes there are a few advertisements printed into the program, but these are easy to ignore.
shallow
I think that people will eventually grow tired of silly, shallow digital entertainment. The amount of advertising in the world in increasing every day. People will grow tired of always having to wait for an ad to finish. We will instead look to more complete shows, where we can be truly immersed in the production. We will begin to appreciate talented, human actors and prefer true theatre to watching everyday people have pretend crises in their homes.
