part III
A few days after the audition, Jessica was constantly pacing up and down the hall of her apartment. The director still hadn’t called her, and she knew that filming was scheduled to start the next day. When the day ended and Jessica still hadn’t received a call, she went out into the living room and plopped down on the couch next to Beth. “Still no news?” Beth asked. She tried to look surprised. Jessica sadly shook her head. “I thought it was a done deal.”

A Sure Thing

“How did the audition go, anyway?” Beth asked. “You never told us anything.” “It was crazy,” Jessica finally admitted. “I didn’t expect so many people to be there. There must have been about sixty girls. We all looked almost exactly alike. Everyone in the audition was tall with long blonde hair. It felt like we all kind of blended together. I don’t know how the director could keep us all straight.” Jessica sighed again.

"And everyone had these really great performances planned. They were so good. There was every type of dance, singing, pantomime, monologues. One girl even pretended she was a mime. Everyone put a lot of work into their performance.” Beth nodded in sympathy and saw that Jessica was close to tears. “I was so stupid. I thought that when the director told me I was perfect for the role, that I was the only one who was perfect. Turns out, there are a lot of girls just as perfect as I am.”

Beth squeezed her friend’s arm and then asked, “So what did you do for the audition?” “It was terrible,” Jessica moaned. “I really should have listened to you. I was so unprepared. I ended up doing that dance that we learned in gym class. You know the one that’s like a country line dance with a lot of spins. I thought maybe it could be quirky, and it is pretty easy.” Jessica stopped talking and shook her head in embarrassment. “I totally blew it.” “Hey Jess,” Maribel called from the back room. “Your phone is ringing.”
