Poverty is when people can no longer sustain a standard of living.

Nearly 9% of global population lives in extreme poverty (World 2024).

Collaborative Activity

Students will complete a simulation where they are given different lifestyles and unique professions. Students will be given mandatory expenses as well as optional expenses for themselves and their families. The students will need to use their allocated funds to see if they can maintain a universal standard of living, or if they will fall into poverty.

Can they survive on a given wage?

How do they feel if they end up poor?

Are certain cultures more susceptible to poverty?

Read and discover stories of hope that are written by people all over the world who are currently in poverty by visiting: https://www.povertyusa.org/stories (Poverty USA 2024). Explore the website https://concernusa.org/news/worlds-poorest-countries/ to determine how and why some countries are in extreme poverty compared to others. Research and explore the goals that are in existence to end poverty and analyze how realistic they are. (United 2024). https://www.un.org/en/global-issues/ending-poverty

Students will be assessed based on their reflection of the simulation and their responses to these questions:1. What were some strategies people can implement to avoid poverty? If poverty avoidable in all situations? 2. Were you successful in maintaining a standard of living? What were some successes and challenges? 3. How would you solve world poverty?
