How do we improve 6th Grade Student Mastery on identifying the main idea and supporting details?

Collaborative Approach

Graphic Organizer Cognitive Strategy

FLOW MIND MAP

Module starts with overview of best strategies to identify the main idea and supporting passages, with practice passages -------Make sure to explain the difference between a topic and the main idea.--Collaborative Tools to allow collaboration-- Padlet? Nearpod Discussion board? ----Respond to prompts identifying main ideas and/or supporting detail, as well as comment on each other's reasoning (use Habit of Discussion language. Sentence Stems should be offered)--Collaborative Gamification: Quizlet live-- in pairs/small groups, students have reading passages that they must identify main ideas and/or supporting details. Blooket/Gimkit could also work. Could do a game that focuses just on knowing the difference between a topic, main idea, and supporting details.--Jr. Lawyer/Detective: Collaborating students read a passage about their potential client or some ficticious event. They have to explain to the Senior Partner whether a client is innocent or guilty by piecing together the main point and especially the supporting details for that argument. -----Or perhaps the students are the Senior Lawyer reviewing Jr. Attorney summaries of a client/event where they assess whether the Jr. Attorney summarized it correctly and noted the supporting details (evidence) correctly. Students can create videos in Padlet/Nearpod/etc explaining why they were correct or incorrect--Offer texts at different reading levels and different subjects for differentiation--Choice in how students demonstrate mastery: Create a quick video (Padlet, Nearpod, Screencastify, etc.) Or use Suno to create a song identifying a main point and supporting details.

Collectivist/Collaborative

Create a module based on graphic organizers (like mind maps, flow charts, concept maps, etc.) for students to visualize the relationship between the main idea and supporting details.---Google Docs/Slides and Microsoft have templates that can be used, as well as Genially --Video Introduction and/or resource to review the key strategies for identifying the main idea and supporting details.----------Include examples where you/instructor talk aloud how to find the main idea and supporting details. ----------Include examples for the students to practice. If they get answers wrong, ensure there is an explanation addressing the misconception that gives the student another chance to try again--Use a variety of text examples that can relate to students, including about sports, popular movies, and video game storylines--Create multiple modules or find a way to differentiate different reading levels--Need supports so all students benefit-- text needs to be readable in something like Snap and Read or Immersive Reader--Nearpod activities that have short videos and texts where students use Nearpod activities to sort main idea and supporting ideas--Nearpod also has Time to Climb to add in gamification elements.

Visual, Graphic Organizers, Cognitive

Create an escape room lesson focused on students being able to correctly identify the main idea and supporting passages. (Mystery Crime Drama where students have to solve a mystery?)--Create in Genially? Create in Google Forms? Hybrid of digital and non-digital?--Aligned to standards--Video support: Review key strategies for identifying the main idea with an example or two. Start with it? Or perhaps have it accessible at any time if students need a refresher. Students need some place to go for help. Adobe Express Animate from Audio-------A quick CFU embedded after review to make sure students understand and let them practice--Escape Game has a series of puzzles to be solved based on students correctly identifying the main idea and supporting passages of a variety of short reading passages.-Create multiple variations of different reading levels to differentiate?--UDL: everything is accessible, multiple forms of reading/audio/video. Embed some choice in the short reading passages to peak interest. Emergent Bilinguals need support (Snap and Read? Nearpod's Immersive Reader?--Students rewarded for correct answers and finishing the escape game.--Some activities could be outside of the escape room. QR codes around the room that have clues or tips or destinations?--Students can write their own summary and give supporting evidence of something as well. In Genially? In Padlet (students can connect with each other)--Google Forms with Autocrat to email congratulations to students who successfully complete it in time, as well as data for admin/teachers--Students can work alone or with 1-2 other students

Escape Room Braindump Ideas:

Interactivity and animation can be your best allies when creating tables, infographics, or charts to provide context to information and simplify data for your audience. We are visual beings and find it easier to 'read' images than written text.
