The London Metropolitan Police was founded in 1829 by Robert Peel. This police force had a big impact in reducing the crime rate in London. At first, they weren't trusted by a lot of people, but when they proved that they could lower crime rates, people became more trusting.

  • Prisons were created because of the growing crime rate.
  • People had different ideas on how prisoners should be treated while in prison.
  • Prisons during this time period “were mostly small, old and badly-run.”

  • Poisoning
  • Drowning
  • Assassination

Pickpocketing was a large part of small crimes. Garroting was a type of pickpocketing where the victim would be strangled.Most theives were young people. Factory warehouses were stolen from by groups of criminals.

10% of crimes were violent and "around 75% of crimes were petty."

The punishments for crime in vicitorian London were harsh even for a minor crime. Children who committed crimes would most likely have the same punishment as an adult offender.

Working class citezens were often overlooked such as their living conditions were dirty and cramped. Their murders were often not recored and put to the side.
