Lesson 7 - Probability

Simple Probability

Understanding Simple Probability Simple probability refers to the likelihood of a specific event happening. It is often calculated by finding the ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to the total number of possible outcomes.

# of favorable outcomes total # of possible outcomes
p(x) =

Example:When rolling a fair six-sided die, the probability of rolling a 2 is 1 out of 6, since there is only one favorable outcome (rolling a 2) out of six possible outcomes (rolling a number from 1 to 6). By understanding simple probability, we can make predictions and analyze the likelihood of different outcomes in various situations.

Compound Probability

Understanding Compound Probability Compound probability refers to the likelihood of two or more events happening together. To calculate compound probability, you multiply the probability of each individual event.

P(event 1) P(event 2)

Example:Let's consider the scenario of rolling a fair six-sided die and flipping a coin. The probability of rolling a two on the die is 1/6, and the probability of getting heads on the coin flip is 1/2. To find the compound probability of rolling a certain number on the die and getting heads on the coin flip, you multiply 1/6 by 1/2, which equals 1/12. This means there is a 1 in 12 chance of both events occurring simultaneously.

P(2) and P(H) =
