Madison Capitol Fire
The Madison capitol is significant to Wisconsin history because of the fire.
Histroy before the fire
- In 1837 the stone building made from Maple Buff was also made from oak that was harvested.
- The first rebuilding of the Madison capitol was on October 28, 1855.
- The second rebuilding was caused by a fire in 1904.
- In the capitol building is a hall established for the Grand Army Records.
During the fire
- The fire was cause by a gas jet in a closet.
- February 27, 1904 Madison folks woke up to the smell of smoke.
- Madison firefighter came along with two Milwaukee compaines.
- It took up to 20 hours to put out the fire.
After the fire
- After the fire they didn't start rebuilding the capitol until 1906.
- The cost of rebuilding the capitol came up to $7.2 million
- The losses of building were close to $1 million
- The building was finshed in 1917
- The capitol is 13 acres, 284.4 feet tall, and the wings are 25 feet wide.
