WHAT IS A ZENTANGLE®?

What is a pattern?

Zentangles

If we break it down into two words, we get "zen" and "tangle" Zen refers to peacefulness Tangle refers to the doodle-like patterns that get tangled up in this form of drawing A Zentangle is a manner of drawing that incorporates multiple patterns.

back to 3.7

Pattern

A pattern is when elements are repeated in a predictable way.

What is printmaking?

What made printmaking popular?

Stencil Printing

back to 3.7

WOODCUT

relief printing

  • The oldest type of print is a relief print.
  • In relief printing, you carve away any spaces that you want to be white.
  • The ink will stick only to the raised area, which you apply to your paper, fabric, or other surface.
  • The inked areas will transfer ink (color or black) as a negative image to your surface.
  • The un-inked lines are white, not black.

back to 3.7

(in-TAL-ee-oh)

Intaglio

Intaglio is more like drawing. You brush ink into the carved lines, wipe off the surface of the plate, and then use high pressure to press the paper (or other material) to the surface of the plate.

back to 3.7

(Plane-O-gra-FEE)

Types of Planography:

  • Lithography
  • Digital Printing

Planography is printmaking in which the surface is not changed.

Planography

back to 3.7

(luh- thaa-gruh-fee)

Lithography

The most well-known artistic form of planographic printing is lithography. Lithography is very different from intaglio or relief printing. In lithography, you use chemicals to determine what is and is not printed. The basic principle is that grease, or oil, and water do not like to mix.

back to 3.7

stencil printing

Stencil printing requires the use of a screen. Ink passes through the screen and transfers onto the material. Like relief printing, you have to think in reverse. A stencil is a negative image. The holes in the stencil will transfer ink. The surface of the stencil will be white.

back to 3.7

silk screen printing

Silk Screen printing is a type of stencil printing that is used primarily on fabrics. However, it can be used for paper too! This type of printing uses a silk fabric to create the stencils and the printer pushes the ink through the silk as demonstrated on in the video here.

Printmaking's Unique History

Artists can reach a wider audience than by selling a painting or drawing an image.

why create art through printmaking?

A skilled printer will make each print look very similar, but there will always be small differences that make each print unique.

The biggest advantage of printmaking is that more than one person can have an original version of the finished product.

In ancient Mesopotamia, stamps were used to make impressions.Stamps have been around since ancient Mesopotamia. They were made of wood and used to make impressions. This is an example of what that would look like, but there is no "proof" of printmaking at this time.

  • Printing presses also made the process a lot faster for production.
