Objectives:
- Introduce Distributive Property
DistributivE Property
Generally, compute inside PARENTHESIS () first! PEMDAS
How do you compute these expressions:
if a number is next to a set of numbers in parenthesis, you can distribute the number outside to each value inside using multiplication.
Recall that a number OUTSIDE of parenthesis gets MULTIPLIED by anything inside parenthesis. Ways to show multiplication:
Practice:
a) 13 + 12 b) 30 + 2 c) 3 + 20 d) 30 + 20
You can use the distributive property
3(4 + 1) =
8(2 + 3) =
3(4 + 1) =
8(2 + 3) =
3(4) + 3(1) =
8(2) + 8(3) =
OR compute 10(3 + 2) and then see which answer to see which is the same!
3 x 4 = 3 • 4 = 3(4) = (3)(4)
a) 25
b) 32
c) 23
d) 50
10(3 + 2) =
Which of the sums below can be expressed as 10(3 + 2)?
10(3) + 10(2) =
10(3 + 2) =
10(5) =
Rewrite 15 + 25 using GCF and factoring.
Try computing and then see which answer to see which is the same!
a) 10(5 + 15) b) 5(10 + 20) c) 5(3 + 5) d) 15(1 + 10)
3(5) = 15
8(5) = 40
50
15 + 25 =
