La primera generación se extiende entre los años 1945 y 1954. En ella, los ordenadores se caracterizan por sus memorias de válvulas de vacío y relés. Otra característica era su complicada programación, puesto que únicamente podía emplearse el lenguaje binario propio de la máquina u otro algo más evolucionado denominado lenguaje ensamblador. Estos ordenadores solo se empleaban con fines científicos o militares. El primer ordenador de primera generación fue el Eniac, visto anteriormente.

Por último, la quinta generación, que aparece con los ordenadores del año 1991, está aún sin concluir; podemos decir que actualmente utilizamos ordenadores de esta generación.
