Taxonomy Of Choices

Language is all about choices. To understand it, we need to know:

You Try!

  • I was hanging out with a friend.
  • I fell and hurt my hiney.**
  • My pronouns are we/us.

Examples

First, a few silly ones...

  • The Hebrew word for "spirit" is feminine, but the Greek one isn't.
  • The Hebrew word

Examples

Now to think more seriously...

  • The Hebrew word for "spirit" is feminine, but the Greek one isn't.
  • The Hebrew word translated "wife" is the same as "woman"

The Illusion of Choice

Now to think more seriously...

With Genially templates you can include visual resources to leave your audience open-mouthed. Also highlight a specific phrase or fact that remains indelibly in the memory of your audience and even embed external content that surprises: videos, photos, audios...Whatever you want!

Here you can include a relevant datato highlight

  • "Will you turn off the stove when you're done?"
  • "Did John steal my pizza?"
  • "Are you coming with me?"

What's At-Issue?

Though a question might contain many different topics, generally only one of them is at issue

If either of these 5 sentences is what really happened, we would have to answer "no".

What's At-Issue?

In a yes/no question, the only requirement that will make the statement true is what is at-issue.

Did Peter drop my flowers off the balcony?

Here you can include a relevant data to highlight

These statements are often incorrect on matters that are not at-issue, and certain people (especially young boys) really enjoy pointing this out.

  • "That's ok, I took the car."
  • "We have enough food to eat."
  • "There's a couch available in here."

What's At-Issue?

Statements also often have a single topic at-issue:

What's At-Issue?

"not by sword or shield will God save..." (1 Sam. 17:47)
Will God not save His people? Or will He do it via another means?

Implicit Communication

Often, what is at-issue is not explicitly stated in either the question or answer.

Implicit Communication

וַיִּתֶּן לוֹ הַכֹּהֵן קֹדֶשׁ כִּי לֹא הָיָה שָׁם לֶחֶם 1 Sam. 21:7 (omits "bread")

Technical Terminology

abc
Often, the same words can be used in a technical or non-technical way.
  • the "cloud"
  • economic "demand"
  • "amphibian" vs. "bug"
  • "blaspheme"

Technical Terms

Technical terms are very specific in their meaning. They avoid ambiguity and can communicate a lot of information in very few words.
  • (adj) free from all charges or deductions
  • (verb) to cover or enclose with a net
  • (verb) to catch using a net
  • (noun) an open-meshed fabric twisted, knotted, or woven together

Create your own example questions and specify the 1 thing at-issue in each of them:

Maximum Annoyance

  • Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.
  • Consectetur adipiscing elit.
  • Sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut.

What do the following choices communicate?

3. Can I have ______________?

In order to evaluate claims about language, we need to understand the choices made, but you don't need to memorize every choice. Identifying the relevant choices is key! Before making a big deal about the following observations, what choices should you know about?

Inspecting Choices

  • My child got sick from your broccoli.
