On August 16, 1963, countless black people came to listen to MLK’s "I Have a Dream" speech in Washington, D.C. The speech influenced many blacks and inspired people to fight for equality in peaceful protest so that the color of their skin would not be judged.

Room 02

Nine African American children, scholars, went to attend Little Rock High School on September 4, 1957. They had to be heavily guarded because of the people who were against desegregating Little Rock would try to fight them out of the school. This is important because it was one of the first steps to desegregating the town of Little Rock, which then spread to more desegregation in other areas.

In the late 1960s and 70s in Greenwood Mississippi, Malcolm X and Black Muslims believed that Blacks were superior and they should take action for Black equality by any means necessary. After Malcolm's death, it helped lead the Blacks to taking steps for desegregation. It helped show Blacks how important their race is; racial pride, and how to defend themselves.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is significant since Rosa Parks was the one who made desegregation on buses.

On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Rosa Parks decided to sit in the whites-only seat on the bus and got arrested. The black people chose not to go on the bus for a year. Eventually, it lead to desegregation in buses. This is important because it showed that it leads to greater efforts to desegregate schools; and greater promotion of peaceful protest to desegregate other public places It showed that peaceful protests can lead to legal change..

MLK's legacy is important because he was the leader of the Civil Rights movement and persuaded many people to fight for equal rights.

Brown vs. Board of Education

In 1954, in Topeka Kansas, there was a hearing on whether or not the people in the South should desegregate schools between NAACP and John. W. Davis. Eventually, Brown and the NAACP won with the help of Thurgood Marshall,. The Supreme Court declared that School segregation is illegal nationwide and schools must desegregate with “deliberate speed." This is important because it opened the chance to desegregate every possible public area in the South.
