A Organização das Nações Unidas é uma organização internacional fundada em 1945. Atualmente, é composta por 193 Estados-membros. A missão e o trabalho das Nações Unidas são guiados pelos propósitos e princípios contidos na sua Carta fundadora – a Carta das Nações Unidas.

A sede das Nações Unidas fica em Nova Iorque, nos Estados Unidos, em território internacional. A ONU tem a sua própria bandeira, correios e selos postais. São utilizadas seis línguas oficiais: árabe, chinês, espanhol, russo, francês e inglês. Portugal aderiu á Onu dia 14 de dezembro.

Fundação da ONU

Em 1945, representantes de 50 países reuniram-se em São Francisco, na Conferência das Nações Unidas, para redigir a Carta das Nações Unidas. A deliberação dos delegados foi redigida com base em propostas elaboradas pelos representantes da China, União Soviética, Reino Unido e dos Estados Unidos em agosto e outubro de 1944.

A Organização das Nações Unidas foi criada oficialmente a 24 de outubro de 1945, quando a Carta foi ratificada pela China, França, União Soviética, Reino Unido, Estados Unidos e pela maioria dos outros signatários.

A Carta foi assinada a 26 de junho de 1945 pelos representantes dos 50 países.

Secretário-geral da ONU

António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres assumiu funções como secretário-geral das Nações Unidas no dia 1 de janeiro de 2017, sendo a nona pessoa a ocupar este cargo.

António Guterres, nasceu em Lisboa a 30 de abril de 1949. Entrou para o sistema das Nações Unidas em 2005, quando foi nomeado alto comissário das Nações Unidas para os Refugiados, cargo que viria a ocupar durante 10 anos. Guterres exerceu este cargo em tempos exigentes, tendo lidado com uma das mais graves crises de refugiados das últimas décadas, com o agravamento de conflitos na Síria, no Iraque e no Iémen e de várias crises no continente Africano, como no Sudão do Sul e na República Centro-Africana. Guterres, foi ainda membro fundador do Conselho Português para os Refugiados, em 1991, e da Associação para a Defesa do Consumidor (DECO). É ainda, membro do Clube de Madrid e do Fórum Ibero-Americano. Tendo assistido ao sofrimento dos grupos mais vulneráveis da sociedade em campos de refugiados e zonas de guerra, António Guterres está determinado a servir como um intermediário para a paz, construindo pontes e promovendo a inovação e a reforma. Hoje, como secretário-geral das Nações Unidas, Guterres é o porta-voz para os interesses e necessidades de todos, especialmente dos mais fracos e vulneráveis.

Principais objetivos da ONU

O objetivo da ONU é o de unir todas as nações do mundo em prol da paz e do desenvolvimento, com base nos princípios da justiça, dignidade humana e no bem-estar de todos.
