What is collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It provides structure to much of the body, being a major building block for bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The body makes its own collagen but as we get older our bodies produce less of it. Collagen can also be damaged by certain behaviours, such as:
- Eating too much sugar and refined carbs
- Getting too much sunshine
- Smoking
Collagen supplements
Collagen supplements can be taken to help replace some of what the body no longer makes. The upper limit dosage of collage is around 2000mg of collagen per day. However, collagen is non-toxic and there are no known drug interactions. There are several forms of collagen available:
Hydrolysed collagen
Marine collagen
Bovine collagen
Eggshell membrane
Gelatin isn’t strictly collagen, although the two are similar.
Benefits
There aren’t many studies on collagen supplements, but those that exist show promise for benefits in the following areas:
- Muscle mass
- Arthritis
- Skin Elasticity
- Gut Health.

Summary
- Collagen is a major building block for bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It deteriorates naturally with age and due to certain lifestyle behaviours.
- Collagen supplements can be taken counteract this and can come from different sources such as fish, cows and eggshells.
- Collagen is safe to take and doesn't interact with any other medications.
Hydrolyzed Collagen
This collagen has been broken down into basic amino acids that serve as building blocks of proteins. Because it’s so broken down, hydrolyzed collagen is easily absorbed into your bloodstream.
Eggshell membrane
Eggshell membrane contains essential compounds your body requires to build, repair, and maintain healthy joints. It's becoming an increasibly popular source of collagen for vegetarians.
Bovine collagen
Bovine collagen comes from cows and is thought to help with joint health.
Marine Collagen
Marine collagen is extracted from the bones, skin and scales of fish. This is thought to be the most effective at skin and bone support.
