Unilever Global

  • In 2021, Unilever launched the Supplier Climate Program to enhance Unilever's Chief Procurement Officer Willem Uijen, highlighted the importance of partnership and shared learning in this effort, explaining that the program enables suppliers to track their progress and identify decarbonization opportunities.
  • Due to these partnerships companies like Weener Plastics and Ball Corporation have actively participated, utilizing tools provided by the program to calculate their product carbon footprints and improve their operations.
  • The program emphasizes the necessity of joint action across value chains to address climate challenges.
  • Looking ahead, Unilever anticipates increased momentum among its suppliers in taking climate action, intending to reduce GHG emissions by 2030 through collaborative efforts significantly.

British-Dutch multinational, Unilever Global, is one of the world’s leading consumer goods firms, selling some of the best known food, cleaning and personal care brands (Corporate Watch, 2019).

  • For over 90 years, Nestle-Purina, or just Purina, has believed that pets and people are better together.
  • The company's commitment to high-quality pet food stems from their love for pets, which Purina believes is a part of daily lives, even in the workplace.
  • Purina is dedicated to pet welfare beyond nutrition, raising awareness of pets' needs.
  • Understanding unique bond pets create within families and communities.
  • Purina fosters a passionate work environment centered around pets and evident in its office culture.
  • Purina's ongoing research and innovation in pet nutrition push them to improve the well-being of pets year after year, taking pride in their efforts

Nestlé Purina is a top company in the pet care industry, focusing on producing pet food and related products.

'"I’m convinced that we’ll solve the climate crisis, but the longer we take, the more grave the risks we're taking with humankind." Al Gore.

Climate change is a long-term shift in temperature and weather patterns (United Nations, 2024).

Climate Change and it's Impact on Society
Below are several outcomes that we must consider:
  • Significant impacts on the biodiversity of the world (Safdie, 2023).
  • Serious risk to human well-being and stability (Safdie, 2023).
  • Endangerment of various animal and plant species (Safdie, 2023).
  • Occurrence of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, wildfires, and hurricanes (Safdie, 2023).

Purina's Response to Climate Change

Leaders on the UN’s sustainability list (Amdur, 2021).

Both companies are very Corporate Socially Responsible regarding climate

Supporting soil health (Purina, n.d.).

Net Zero by 2050 (Purina, n.d.).

Restore 1,500 hectares of critical marine habitats (BusinessGreen, 2024).

Cutting emissions in its operations to net zero by 2030 (Amdur, 2021).

Having shareholders vote on reducing greenhouse gas emissions(Amdur, 2021).

  • Both companies are committed to taking action and addressing climate change challenges head-on while aligning with local and international outlooks.

Synopsis

  • After researching both companies, I found no hard evidence indicating that either company was socially irresponsible regarding climate change.
  • Both organizations addressed environmental issues, with a wide range of ideas working towards sustainability, and are working toward aligning their goals with the United Nations.
  • Unilever and Nestle-Purina work hard to promote climate change and share best practices with other companies.
  • These actions show their commitment to corporate social responsibility and highlight the growing understanding that businesses play a consequential role in addressing and stopping global climate change now and in the future.
