La volta della Cappella Sistina contiene un celeberrimo ciclo di affreschi di Michelangelo Buonarroti, realizzato nel 1508-1512 e considerato uno dei capolavori assoluti e più importanti dell'arte occidentale. Commissionato da papa Giulio II fu un'immane sfida per l'artista che, sebbene non sentisse la pittura come la forma d'arte a lui più congeniale, terminò la complessa decorazione di quasi 550 m² in soli quattro anni e senza aiuti.
Muore il 18 Febbraio 1564. Ora si trova Nella Sala di Michelangelo e dei fiorentini, Il biografo italiano Giorgio Vasari definì Michelangelo Buonarroti l'apice di tutte le conquiste artistiche dall'inizio del Rinascimento.

La Pietà Rondanini è un'opera marmorea scolpita nel 1552-1553 e rilavorata dal 1555 circa al 1564; è conservata nel Museo del Castello Sforzesco a Milano. Si tratta dell'ultima opera dell'autore, che secondo le fonti vi lavorò fino a pochi giorni prima di morire.
