Reasons For Knee cartillage replacement
- osteoarthritis
- rheumatoid arthritis:
- inflamation in the joints causing cartillage breakdown
- Injury
- Avascular Necrosis
- This condition occurs when the blood supply to the bone
- Tears in the meniscus
Knee Cartillage replacement
how the cells are harvested
ways the 3D systems are implemented
- After formed into a 3D system they are placed into the damaged part of the knee through any of these techniques:
- Microfracture: Small holes are drilled into the bone beneath the damaged cartilage to stimulate the growth of new cartilage
- Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI): Cultured chondrocytes are injected into the defect and covered with a membrane to keep them in place.
- Matrix-induced autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (MACI): Chondrocytes are seeded onto a scaffold before being implanted.
- Chondrocytes
- harvested from the patient’s cartilage (autologous) or donor tissue (allogeneic)
- MSCs
- sourced from bone marrow or adipose tissue
- (iPSCs):
- derived from the patient’s own cells.
How Cells are combined to create cartilage
To create functional cartilage, chondrocytes, MSCs, and iPSC-derived chondrocytes are often combined in 3D culture systems or scaffolds. 3D scaffolds are 3D structures made from biocompatible materials that provide a framework for new cartilage to grow they are designed to degrade over time as new tissue forms.
recovery
- Recovery includes physical therapy which is the crucial part to restore joint function and strength.
