Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth, born Isabella Baumfree, was born in 1797. There is no specific birthdate for Truth. Since Truth was a slave she was prevented from education. Truth was born in New York as an American Citizen. Truth sadly passed on November 26th, 1883. It was believed that Truth was about 86 when she passed. Truth left a long lasting impact on African-Americans and Women during her lifetime.

Sojourner's Cause

Sojourner fought for many things. Two of her most important causes were Womens Rights and African-American rights. She also fought for Alcohol Temprence. She started her activism with the help of William Lloyd Garrison (left). Garrison had a anti-slavery orginization which ultimately encoureged Truth to give speeches about the evils of slavery.

Sojourner's Sucsesses

Truth had many successes in her life time. Since Truth was a slave she was tired of all the work and crulety she had to endorse. As a slave she ran away from her owners with her daughter. She was never caught after the run. After she ran away she sued the owners for the illegal selling of he 5 year old son. She was the first black woman to file a court case that ultimately was a successe. Truth got her son back after the court case.

Sojourner Truth's Setbacks

Truth had many setbacks in her lifetime. Some of Truth's setbacks were brutal. First, she was a slave who had to endure long hours of brutal labor. In 1827 truth was legally free although her owner was going to keep and sell her illegally. After Truth and her daughter runaway, the owners sold her son thousands of miles away to Alabama. This was a major setback as it was an illegal selling.
