Nominalization and Functions of Grammatical Components

Jessica Aguilar Valderrama

1. Functions of Grammatical Components: Verbs, Nouns, and Adjectives

Verbs: Words that indicate actions, states, or processes. Examples: run, think, exist. Nouns: Words that name people, things, places, ideas, or events. Examples: cat, happiness, meeting. Adjectives: Words that describe or qualify a noun, providing additional information about its characteristics. Examples: big, beautiful, interesting.

2. Nominalization

Nominalization is the process of transforming verbs or adjectives into nouns. For example: Verb to noun: to decide → decision. Adjective to noun: happy → happiness. This allows sentences to be restructured to make them more formal or academic, giving more emphasis to the action or state rather than who performs it.

3. Using the "-ing" Ending for Nominalizing Verbs

Verbs can be nominalized by adding the "-ing" ending, turning them into gerund nouns: Running becomes a noun that indicates the activity or act of running. Writing becomes a noun that indicates the act of writing. In these cases, the "-ing" forms function as nouns in the sentence: Running is good for health. Writing helps to express ideas.

4. Difference Between "-ing" and "-ed" in Adjectives

"-ing" Ending

"-ed" Ending

vs

Indicates that someone experiences a feeling or emotional state. Example: I was excited. The person experiences the excitement.

5. Examples of Nominalization

Verb with "-ing": "swimming" becomes a noun indicating the sport or activity of swimming.

Verb: "to inform" → Nominalization: "information".

Verb: "to explain" → Nominalization: "explanation".

Adjective: "happy" → Nominalization: "happiness".

Thanks:)
