O selénio encontra-se sobretudo em pequenas quantidades nos minerais de enxofre (sulfuretos) e concentra----se ao transformar o dióxido de enxofre obtido destes minerais em ácido sulfúrico. Este processo tem lugar nas câmaras de chumbo.

O SELÉNIO
Foi descoberto em 1817 pelo químico sueco, Jons Jacob Berzelius em Estocolmo, localizado na Suécia. O nome deste elemento deriva da palavra "selene" em grego, que significa luz. Este elemento aparece em duas modificações alotrópicas vermelhas não metálicas e numa modificação cinzento-metálica.
O SELÉNIO NO NOSSO CORPO:
- A dose diária recomendada do selénio é de 55µg/dia para as mulheres, homens e adolescentes. Já para as crianças os valores variam entre 20 e 40µg/dia. O selénio é encontrado em vários alimentos.
- Apesar de ser fundamental para o nosso organismo, NÃO devemos ingeri-lo em excesso, pois pode provocar vários malefícios e em casos raros, morte.

Desempenha funções essenciais no nosso organismo, como a prevenção de certas doenças.
É utilizado nas células solares ou fotovoltaicas (dispositivos que convertem a luz solar em energia elétrica) e em fotocélulas (dispositivos usados para iluminação automática).
Ajuda no bom funcionamento dos hormónios da tiroide, ajuda a melhorar o sistema imunológico e auxilia na saúde dos ossos e articulações.
Na fabricação de vidros, é usado como descolorante.
Na área de fotocópias e fotografia, o selénio era utilizado, desempenhando a função de tonalizante de imagens em preto e branco..
