Selma Marches

People marched in the Selma marches to get equal voting rights. They wanted to get ride of the Poll Tax and all the other unfair voting rules. African Americas didn't have equal voting rights so they marched to make it right. The first march ended in violence and the second ended when troops stopped them. The third ended successful. with help from federal troops. These marches help so many be able to vote and show there vote in the next elections. Do you think the 3rd march would have been sucessful without the help from federal troops?

The I Have A Dream speech was so impactful and so was the Gettysburg Adress. They have both added so much to the improvement of equality and in lots of ways are similar. Although Lincoln was never there to see Martin Luther King give his speech, he must have also felt impowered because he wanted equality for the United States of America almost as much as Martin Luther King did. Do you think Lincoln would have participated in marches and made more history making speechs if he was still alive then?

Martin Luther King was one of the most impactful person in civil rights history. He made tons of speeches and walked in many marches in his life span. Sadly, he did die before he hit the age of 40. He was assasined on his hotel balcony. He was shot to death by 2 men. The sadest part is when he died his voice died too. Now people have recaptured his death place and made it into a place to go to see what happened, and his voice is respected now more than ever. If he had not died he might still be alive today. Do you think he would have been still making speeches and participating in marches and protest today?

On March 7th, 1965, manny African americans in Selma, Alabama planned to march for voting rights because they were being stopped from voting. Selma March #1

This is a photograph pf MLK in Memphis, Tennessee before his assasination.

When I heard about MLK's assassination I first thought why was he in Memphis, Tennessee? He didn't live there, he was there to say another speech and march in another march. Just like he did when he was in Illinois, for his I Have A Dream speech.

Why Was MLK In Memphis, Tennessee

MLK' s I have a dream speech was exactly 100 years after Lincolns speech to the day. Lincolns Speech (the Gettysburg Adress) was all about how he believed in equality, just like MLK. Although Lincoln was a white president in the time of slavery, he was still a strong believer of equality.

When the speech took place

This is a photo of MLK performing his iconic speech for the first time.

MLK was a strong believer of equality and liberty for all and so was Lincoln. Both believed, but only MLK fought for it. Even just his I Have A Dream speech was a push for equality. Even though Lincoln didn't march in marchs he still made exellent speechs about equality to the public.

What Did MLK Believe

MLK giving his speech about equality and freedom to over 250,000 people.

The United States of America constitution promised equality, liberty, and respect to all but more than 100 years later we still didn' t have that. Both the Gettysburg Adress and I Have A Dream speech talk against the fact the we have not been granted what we have been promised.

Getting What We Have Been Promised

Tons of people showed up just to listen to MLk talk.

This was one of MLK' s last speeches before his assassination.

When MLK died so did his voice. He was a huge equality matters "influencer" in his day. When he died and there was nobody else there making life changing speechs the equality matters voice died too.

What Happened to MLK' s Voice?

If you go to Memphis, Tennessee you will find the exact building where MLK was assassinated. They have turned the once hotel into a museum with an exact repleca of the scene where MLK would have died. Here you can learn how he got assassinated and feel what MLK would have felt standing there.

Selma March #3

In the marches 3rd try, it was finally successful! The government sent troops to protect MLK and his marchers so they could be successful. The made it all the way to Mongomery, Alabama and won voting rights for all African Americans. They could no longer be stopped/threatened to not vote and over 250,000 African Americans registered to vote because of it.

The Selma Marches are stopped and met with troops for the second time

Selma March #2

On March 9th, 1965, the Selma Marches were again unsuccessful, but were less violent. The marchers in Selma, Alabama are persistent and continue to fight for their rights. They were stopped at the bridge by more troops, so MLK decided to retreat and they went back the way they came.
