Summary

Summary

The Iluminatti started as a normal 'semi-secret' society that opposed abuse of power and other similar thoughts, however were shut down by laws from Charles Theodore. However, some people thought they survived and the Iluminatti became one of the most popular conspiracy theories, popularized in the 1800s and again in the 1900s through people like the physicist John Robinson and the satirical author Robert Shea, stating that they were behing many important events like the French Revolution.

This culminated in the New World Order conspiracy theory, stating that many important world leaders were actually figureheads of the Iluminatti, and that the Iluminatti had been orchestrating many important events like the Stock Market Crash, JFK, & the Reign of Terror, and that they were doing this to incite a totalitarian government.

Historical Context+Cause of the panic

Illuminati

Bavarian Illuminati Conspiracy

European Political Trouble (1700s)

The Enlightenment period was an era where rational thought, science, and challenge to traditional authority, especially the church and monarchy, rose exponentially in importance. Newly minted intellectuals promoted freedom of expression and secular governance in accordance with this time period's new values.

The Enlightenment (18 Century)

Monarchies faced growing revolutionaries in the 1700’s such as the American Revolution and the anticipation of the French Revolution leading the governments to be wary of secret societies due to their perceived threat.

Due to growing fears of subversion, in 1785, Bavarian authorities banned all secret societies (the Illuminati, freemasons, etc.) since they believed that those societies were a threat to social order.

The New World Order

Globalization

Cold War Era

The United Nation, International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank’s establishment after World War II fueled conspiracy theorist’s fears of global control and the elite influence of unknown and powerful characters.

Post-World War II

The rivalry between the U.S. and the Soviet Union led to fears of global domination by either communism or capitalist elites. The growing surveillance state, NATO, and McCarthyism increased fears of secret powers manipulating world events.

The increase of multinational corporate power, international banking systems, and global trade agreements like NAFTA raised public concern over the disregard of national sovereignty in favor of a single world government.

Political Speeches

George H. W. Bush’s speech in 1991 following the Soviet Union’s collapse referred to a “new world order,” which conspiracy theorists interpreted as evidence of a secret plan for global domination. The phrase only led theorists to spread more claims of their being a centralized authority controlling international affairs.
