The Civil Rights legislation was a big step forward for African Americans and helped them improve their lives. The 24th Amendment banned the poll tax, which means you can't charge a fee to vote. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 stated that segregation was illegal and outlawed segregation based on race, sex, skin color, or origin. Lastly, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 banned literacy tests and ensured there were no roadblocks for African Americans.

The death of MLK shocked the world. Once again, he was the person directing all of these protests and speeches. This did not make African Americans happy, and they were furious. King was 39 at the time and had an entire life ahead of him before he was killed. He died in Memphis, Tennessee, in his hotel after a day of protesting. The hotel where he was killed is now used as a memorial site to remember Martin Luther King Jr.
