Context
This peice is Pablo Picasso's "The Old Guitarist" and comes from his "blue period". It was made in 1903-1904 and can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago. During this period, Picasso was focused on themes of suffering and poverty, which is why he mainly used shades of blue. The painting illuminates Picasso's emotions of misery and pain. It was based off of Spanish art, in particular the painter El Greco.
Aural Elements:
The painting depicts a blind musican who is playing the guitar. Because he is blind, his other senses, especually his hearing, is heightened. Picasso symbolized this by adding more demention and shadow to the ear, in contrast with his white hair, which accentuates how he uses his hearing to make up for his lack of sight. You can see that he is struming the guitar, as well as having his mouth open. Both of these components add aurality to the peice. Also, his shirt being ripped adds a further layer of sound, becuase the viewers can picture the noise of the cloth tearing.
Carvaggio Reading
In many of Carvaggio's paintings, he sought to quicken the emotional impact that they gave by incorporating sounds into the work. Picasso does the same thing in this peice becuase he adds sound into the painting to demonstrate the hardships of life in poverty and trying to make ends meet. Carvaggio also speaks on how life is very unexpected and takes turns which is demostrated through music. he says "The ephemeral nature of such sounds has the further effect of accentuating the transitory nature of the action, a crucial element in distilling on canvas the spontaneity of life.” (35) This painting is a representation of picasso when he had no money, and demostrates how quickly life can be changed.
Synesthesia Reading
In the text, the author says that "Most artists who experimented with synaesthesia invoked musical analogy in order to emphasize the formal values of painting”. In this painting, the monochromatic use of blue to symbolize depression, poverty, and overall sad emotions is a use of synesthesia. The artist, Picasso, assosiates colors with certain emotion, as well as a slow and sad music that the musican is making, which is illustrated through his facial expressions.
