The Civil Rights legislation was meant to make life fairer for African Americans. It started with the 24th Amendment, which stated that a person cannot be charged money to vote (banning the poll tax). It also consists of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlaws discrimination based on race, color, sex, or any form of segregation. And finally, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which banned the literacy test to ensure African Americans could vote without obstacles.
