history

New Zealand was one of the last land areas to be populated by human beings. Māori were the first inhabitants. According to them, the first explorer to reach New Zealand was their intrepid ancestor, Kupe, the great navigator, around 1000 years ago. Using the stars and ocean currents as his navigational guides, he ventured across the Pacific on his voyaging canoe, from his ancestral Polynesian homeland. They remained isolated in New Zealand until the arrival of European explorers.

The first European to sight New Zealand was Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642. His mission was considered unsuccessful because he hadn't found ‘no treasures or matters of great profit’. By the time British naval captain James Cook visited the country in 1769, the Māori population was not much greater than 100,000. They had no name for themselves but eventually adopted the name Māori (meaning “normal”) to distinguish themselves from the Europeans, who, after Cook´s voyage, began to arrive with greater frequency. The country gained its independence from Britain in 1947. Today it is a member of the Commonwealth.

common stereotypes

New Zealanders are friendly and down-to-earth people who embrace the spirit of manaakitanga, or hospitality.New Zealanders are distinctive for their twangy dialect of English and propensity to travel long distances, and are quickly associated with the All Blacks rugby team and the haka. The name 'kiwi' comes from the curious little flightless bird that is unique to New Zealand. Just like the bird, New Zealanders are unique, adaptable and a little quirky.

"There are more sheep than people in New Zealand""Kiwis hate to be called kiwis.""New Zealanders are adrenaline junkies."
