Tne Freedom Riders were a group of African Americans who attempted to use desegregated facilities to go from Washington to New Orleans. However, when reaching Alabama, they were attacked.

Birmingham in 1963 was a bad time for every resident. In 1963, A large march took place in Birmingham, using students as the protesters. Shockingly, The students were met with extreme violence, such as water hoses and being beaten. It resulted in outrage across the country.

Montgomery Station

The station

On May 20, 1961, A Greyhound bus stopped at the Old Montgomery Station, where a mob of KKK members, yet again, were waiting for them. The riders were attacked, and, shockingly, Emergency services refused to offer assistance.

The Firebombing

On May 14, 1961, A mob of KKK members swarmed a Greyhound Bus carrying the Freedom Riders. Thankfully, none died, but this caught the attention of the nation.

Daisy Bates

NAACP President

Daisy Bates was the President of the NAACP at the time of this event. Her house was designated a historical site in 2001.

Central High School

Where it happened

Little Rock Central High School is a major high school, and on September 23, 1957, 9 Black students attempted to enter the school. The governor refused, sending in the National Guard. Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States at the time, sent in elite paratroopers to force the school to let the students in.

This church is the place where the children organized before the march. The church was bombed a couple months later, tragically killing 4 young girls.

Monument to the 9

The Testament is located at the Arkansas State Capitol, and it is a memorial for the Little Rock 9 (although 8/9 are still alive).

Gaston Motel

Other place

This motel was home to A.G. Gaston. It was bombed as a part of the 1963 Birmingham riots.
