Selma Marches, 1965
In Selma, Alabama, The Selma Marches set out to bring attention to African American voting rights. The first march took place on March 7, 1965 but ended because of heavy violence. The second march, on March 9, 1965 ended again because of violence. On the third and last march on March 21, 1965 they were watched closely by many different officials like FBI agents and troops, but the walk continued to the state capitol until March 25. As a result of the marches, the Voting acts right of 1965 was passed!

Alabama state troopers trying to stop Selma Marches
In this photo people are marching with signs specifically the one in the center.
The Selma marches were met with violence from the state troopers trying to stop them, for all three marches. But the people were resistant like a rubber band and bounced back!
This is the Voting Acts Right of 1965
The Selma marches were meant to bring attention to African Americans voting. These signs were used to show their intentions, thoughts, and feelings to their community.
The Selma marches wanted to bring attention to African American voting rights. Becuse of their determination they caught the attention of the government and the act was passed.

In Birmingham Alabama, 1962, Martin Luther King arrived ready for the protests that were happening all around the South to come to Alabama. Unfortunately MLK was immediately arrested after arriving. After getting out he organized a march that would include over 100,000 children to avoid being attacked. In the end, almost all of the children that participated were arrestedor injured by the hose they blasted them with. This event horrified Americans all over the country.

People being hosed down by police for marching
People were hosed down with water hoses and even children were being attacked. Because of this many Americans were shocked and changed their views on segregation because of the violence.

Martin Luther King Junior wrote a letter on a piece of toilet paper explaining the goals of the movement that he wanted to work toward, and he wrote the letter in Birmingham Jail when he was arrested. The photo above is a copy.
This is the mayor that reluctantly opened the library, golf courses, parks, and schools to all citizens. Everyone begrudginly followed what the mayor ordered, but violence struck still.

The Assasination Of MLK
Martin Luther King was unfortunately injured at his hotel in Memphis Tenessee. He was rushed to the hospital but sadly passed away. The news devistaded Americans all across the country. This caused mass violence and more were then killed. The civil rights community was struck hard and no one was willing to try and take on the role of the leader and take Martin Luther Kings place. After his death, he was awarded the Presidental Medal Of Freedom and, at the time, was the youngest person ever to receive such an honor.
