Song of the Week

Song of the Week

Thank you Dima Khizhinskiy

Contemporary pop music from the Sahara desert, where songs are stored on cellphones. Collected in Northern Mali in 2010 (since taken over by extremists who've banned music on cellphones) the second volume expands into new sonic territory - from dreamy Niger guitar ballads, Bamako club juke, to hi energy Moroccan child Raï - with a focus on the Autotuned DIY creations circulating the desert.

Islam & Climate Justice

Promoting climate justice...In the meantime, suppressing environmental advocavy & repressing activists under the guise of national security..."McGill grad jailed in Iran being criminalized for environmental work, says friend Niloufar Bayani, accused of espionage while studying endangered cheetahs, could face death penalty."

ThE dual role of the clerical establishment—advocating for ecological responsibility while being intertwined with state economic imperatives—illustrates the complex landscape of climate justice in the region.

Authoritarian Politics & Environmental Management

greenwashing—where states use 'green' narratives to project a progressive image internationally while continuing harmful environmental practices domestically.Environmental securitization is a key aspect, where governments frame environmental challenges as national security threats, using them to justify increased control over resources and populations.

Climate Change& Local Communities

Environmental crises (e.g., desertification, drought) often used as justifications for displacing nomadic or rural communities in the name of development, modernization, or environmental protection. Extractivism—large-scale removal of natural resources for global markets—has disproportionately harmed marginalized communities. Oil and gas extraction, for instance, leads to pollution and environmental degradation, disproportionately affecting local populations and exacerbating social and racial inequalities. This can tie into environmental racism, where marginalized communities bear the brunt of ecological harm.

Climate Justice & Indigenous Knowledge"Roquiya, a fifty-four-year-old woman, can name every grass, flower, and herb that blooms from Feija’ssoil. She has spent her entire life here, wandering the plains just outside her family’s farm every morningand evening with her herds. Every plant has a local name and purpose. The dried sap from the acacia tree can be collected and sold for ten USD per kilo. Lakamuna, a small yellow flower, is used in tea andis mixed with henna to put on babies’ heads to protect them from the sun during long days herding in the khala (wild, empty rangelands)."- Jamie Fico

The Uneven Politics of Green Initiatives

Climate colonialism occurs when wealthier nations push carbon-reduction strategies onto poorer countries, while continuing to drive global emissions themselves. This cycle of green dependency forces local economies to adopt costly green technologies that benefit global powers, deepening inequalities.
