Stigma & Misconceptions

9 out of 10

As we have already discussed mental health problems are a common issue for people yet according to the Mental Health Foundation “Nearly nine out of ten people with mental health problems say that stigma and discrimination have a negative effect on their lives”

Stigma

Stigma can also be responsible for someone notaccessing the support that they need therefore it’s important that we challenge any misconceptions surrounding mental health when we can.

One step at a time

It’s important that you understand that you are not expected to be a mental health expert or counsellor, but there are ways in which you can support both yourself and your colleagues to maintain good mental health as well as help signpost those who may be struggling to the right resources.

How to support

Simple actions such as checking in with your colleagues regularly, being open to conversations about how you are feeling and creating an environment that is supportive and non-judgemental can make a genuine difference, encourage someone to seek support when needed and also help to combat the stigma that still surrounds mental health problems.
