Update from the Head

Another busy week, which began with St John’s House Punch on Monday. We’ve also had some of our students picking fresh apple from our orchards. This not only encourages healthy eating across our pupils and staff, but it is an Ampleforth tradition and a small step towards our wider sustainability. The middle of the week featured our Online Open Day, with parents and children joining from the UK and overseas, to hear about the College, to ask questions, and to listen to a selection of current students talking about their experiences here. The event went smoothly and was well attended. As usual, our students were the stars!

Update from the Head

We also had a staff quiz night in the Windmill on Thursday evening. As well as contributing to good causes, those emerging from the quiz were treated to the College being illuminated by the Northern Lights, with some keen photographers capturing the show magnificently. Our sporting teams are looking forward to another busy weekend of fixtures. Our U14 Hockey Team have maintained their winning momentum and have progressed to being the Yorkshire Champions! They will compete in the North Finals later in November. Our 1st XV made it five wins out of six when they sailed past Durham Johnston School in the first round of the nationals.

Update from the Head

Thank you for all the great support from the Upper Sixth parents for what was a really successful parents’ day last weekend. We look forward to welcoming Louis Hall (OA) back next Monday to deliver a HM lecture about his charity ‘The Big Hoof.’ All best wishes, Peter

Congratulations to our U14 Hockey Yorkshire Winners! Their victories continue. They will now compete at the North Finals later in November.

Congratulations to the Boys 1st XV Rugby team following a 52-19 win over Durham Johnston School. We are now through to the 4th round of the U18 National Schools Vase Competition

Message from Mrs Dent

We know these won't be the only images of the Aurora Borealis we were treated to last night in the valley. There were some truly amazing sights captured by a merry band of Aidan's sky-watchers. A perfect end to a crisp Autumn week. We're in full planning mode for our House Retreat next week, when we'll be living a day in the life of a monk. We're so very grateful for the support of Fr Ambrose, lay chaplain Gabrielle Foster and the monastic community in facilitating this unique experience for the girls. We look forward to sharing the details of how it went next week. It was great to catch up with our Year 13 parents last weekendand to engage in such open and fruitful conversation with subject teachers over how best to support the girls as they move forward in this pivotal year for their academic journeys.

Isla and Lottie had the privilege of travelling to Oxford on Wedneday on a 'Catechists' retreat. As part of the day, they visited St John Henry Newman’s oratory and retreat at Littlemore.

In other news....

Sophie celebrated her 18th birthday. There were birthdays too for Gabrielle and Sophie R in Year 12.

On Satruday night, Year 9 hosted their entire Year group for a social. They were amazing hosts.

Well done to Emma, Beth and Poppy, who were part of the winning U14 team at the County tournament.

In other news....

There's a distinct Autumnal chill in the air and that has meant the hot water bottles have been out in force - the more novel, the better.

A reminder that if you'd like to keep up with the goings on of the House and girls, then do find us on social media. Please do also feel free to drop me line with news or pictures of interesting or note-worthy things the girls have been up to in the holidays. It's always nice to share their experience more widely on these pages to celebrate the many gifts and achievements of the girls.

Dear Parents, The Northern lights shone brightly over St Bede's House and Aumit Hil last night and cheered us all. Our year 13 House catechist, Evie Minchella, participated in a Chaplaincy trip to Oxford whilst others focused on their upcoming assessments and applications to university, having received welcome feedback from their dedicated teachers last weekend at Parents day. Year 12s are invigorated and recharged this week taking their new A level courses very seriously and setting up good routines for their keen academic focus this year. Our year 10s and 11s are receiving a record number of APs for all the helpful work they are doing around the House and the good attitude they are displaying to their studies. Our year 9 hockey players, Amiya, Grace, Mary, Rose, and Katherine are the Yorkshire county champions! They competed in all 3 rounds of the tournament, going undefeated in all matches. We are incredibly proud of our girls! Warmest regards, Charmaine

Happy 17th Birthday Victoria

YEAR 9s excelling under Miss Lally's direction!

TUTOR OF THE WEEK

'On a trip to a vineyard whilst attending Italian school in Florence over the summer'

My name is Rebekah Lally, and I'm delighted to have joined the house team in St Bede's as tutor to Year 9 this year! This is my third year working at Ampleforth, where I'm currently an apprentice English (and occasional Drama) teacher. Not only am I an Old Amplefordian, I'm also an old Bede's girl, so I'm overjoyed to be back home having spent the last two years gaining experience in other boarding houses around the school. Before deciding to work in education I trained as a classical singer, so I look forward to working with the girls on their House Recital, and our submission for the whole school Singing Competition.

Keep up to date with House events on:

Shorter Days - Longer Effort!

This week I am reminded of the efforts that the boys go to day in day out. As the nights draw in and the Autumnal chill in the air becomes more noticeable, there is no let up for the students academics. This week in particular, as we approach our first set of effort grades, has seen a multitude of assessments across all year groups and subjects. The boys continue to respond well and the continued deluge of positive Ampleforth Points fill me with confidence for the term and year ahead. This week the Northern Lights made a breath-taking appearance and I am again reminded of the beauty that surrounds us and how lucky we are to share the valley. The opportunities this brings and the safety and happiness it creates cannot be underestimated. Preparation for the House Retreat next week is in full flow and I look forward to sharing this with you in the next newsletter. Finally, a polite reminder to access the portal and update us with travel details for half term please!

Message from the Housemaster

Dear parents, It was lovely to meet up with all of our year 13 parents last Saturday. We are preparing for Fr Henry's 90th birthday party this coming Sunday. If anyone wishes to join us, please get in touch. We will be starting at 8.30pm in our house chapel for Mass which Fr Henry will preside over. Other than that, the weather has been much kinder and we enjoyed the Northern Lights last night. Next week, we will be on retreat on Thursday, travelling to Lastingham church for Mass and a pub lunch. We will then make our own rosaries and walk 5 miles to Rosedale Abbey for prayers.

Sporting Success

Our 1st XV fought hard against Durham, but due to injuries sustained in the first 15 minutes, we were not able to prevent a defeat.

Former Head of House - Sam speaking with Fr Henry after Schola Mass.

Message from the Housemaster

Dear Parents, It was a pleasure to pop-in to the Junior Schola rehearsals this week. They have made remarkable progress in such a short time. To have been invited to partake in Schola Mass this evening is truly impressive. We wish them good luck and we look forward to joining them in the Abbey.

There were some outstanding results at various sporting events, most notably on the hockey pitch. Wins at the weekend were then bettered by the Under 14s (with Agnes and Willow) becoming county champions! The Under 13 girls have also qualified through the North Yorkshire competition and will now go to the county cup in November. The boys were also out and about. They competed well at the Aysgarth Cross Country. They ran with great determination and Jacques and Asis finished in the top 10. Well done to all. This weekend will see the girls take on Terrington Hall and the boys travel to Giggleswick.

There were some impressive shots on display last Sunday when we joined the senior students at the Clay Shoot. Ice creams in Helmsley and some light shopping was also enjoyed. This Sunday, we will venture to York for some more shopping and a little bit of culture. Sebastian Phillips

Message from the Housemaster

Dear Parents and Guardians, The temperature is dropping in the valley but the weather has been fine, making it possible for the boys to continue throwing themselves into their various sports and activities. Our fifth 1st XV starter this year took his opportunity with both hands and loved his chance to run out for the red and black. The Game Keepers are poised to go out hunting for the second week in a row and the Cross Country runners are exploring more and more of the nearby woodlands. Next week we have our retreat - the House will be enjoying Mass in the Village with the local parish before walking to Rievaulx Abbey. Dan Housemaster, St Hugh's House

Ralph's visit

This week, we had a visit from Dawn's son Ralph. He came in for breakfast and charmed his way around the House, offering smiles, cuddles and giggles for all the boys.

Message from Ms Buckley

Dear Parents Another exciting week in St Margaret’s it’s great to be back in the valley after work trip. Year 13 had a wonderful parents weekend our last one but not our last get together! Thanks to Moragh for helping prepare it and to the May family for hosting. Lots of congratulations to the under 14 girls this week as they became North Yorkshire Hockey champions and will go into the county finals and hopefully the nationals! Alice and Mima in year 11 took part in the Da Vinci decathlon placing in three categories and 3rd overall. Showing St Margaret's contributions to academics all year round not just in exam results! Today the girls took part in the schools first lunch time recital. It was great to see such a variety of instruments and voices we have in the House and to see the improvement of the girls year on year. The girls came in their CCF uniforms and riding gear to take part. Showing we are in such a busy and active school and how many girls take all the opportunities open to them. Last night we saw the northern lights over St Margaret's the girls came out with their cameras and took a few photos! Next week we have our house retreat always a lovely occasion! Its great to be back with the girls even if they do keep asking me about my holiday. Best wishes Rebecca
