The present simple is essential in English, used widely to describe daily habits and routines, as in "I walk to school."

Simple Past

The "simple past" is used to talk about an action that concluded at a time before the current one. The duration is not relevant. The time in which the action takes place can be the recent past or the distant past. Examples John Cabot sailed to America in 1498. My father died last year. I have lived in Fiji in 1976. We crossed the Channel yesterday.

Simple Past

The past simple is used to express that an idea, action, or state has already been completed. It could have ended five minutes ago or seven centuries ago, but the ending time does not matter, the only key thing is that it is talking about something that no longer happens or exists in the present. To emphasize that this is an accomplished fact, it can be accompanied by context, for example: A year ago, I ate in that restaurant. / A year ago I ate at that restaurant. In 1970, The Beatles split up. / The Beatles broke up in 1970. When you were a child, you liked apples. / When you were a child, you liked apples.

Be careful: the "simple past" of English may resemble a tense in your own language, yet its meaning may be different.

Simple past

If the verb is regular, the past tense is formed by adding the ending -d -ed to the end of the word depending on whether it ends in a vowel or a consonant, respectively. As an additional rule, if the word ends in y, this consonant is changed to the ending -ied. If the verb is irregular, you must use the appropriate conjugation in each case, since it varies for each word.
