How do you protect your privacy?

Privacy is an essential human right that belongs to us, and to which we should have access at all times. We must recognise that despite being the responsibility of the state, our right to privacy is not always respected, which is why it is important that as a community and as individuals we are aware of how the data that belongs to us is used. No one can take that right away from you!

What do we refer to when we talk about the protection of personal data?

We refer to the right that guarantees us the ability to know who, for what purpose, when, and why our personal data is used. Your personal data may be stored in files, registers, public or private data banks and in any company that can access it with or without your consent. This is why it is important that you have the necessary tools for action, because only then can you demand the correct use of your personal data.

start

CASe 1

You have to move from your community to another place - how many documents do you bring with you and where can they be found?

I bring only my voter's credentials, which is kept in a place accessible to me, but hidden.

I bring a lot of identification documents that are visible and accessible to other people.

You got it right!

You arrived at your destination with your ID in your possession. Remember that when you are moving from one place to another it is important to bring as few documents as possible and to keep them in a safe place. ** but remember that you do have to carry identification with you at all times **

CASe 2

You are entering the world of social media - you get a privacy notice when creating your account and you are asked if you want to make your profile public (no restriction to view your content) or private ( access to your content needs to be requested). What do you do?

I don't read the privacy agreement, but my accounts are private.

I read the privacy agreement, but I have my accounts public.

I don't read the privacy agreement because I don't care and I leave my accounts public so that everyone can see my information.

I read the privacy agreement and I have my accounts private.

*When you access a website you are usually asked if you want to accept cookies. This allows websites to remember information about your visit. For greater privacy when browsing the internet it is best to deny access to cookies if the website allows it.

You got it right!

It is important to read the privacy notice of the social networks you use to know what information they can access and disclose. Also, keep your social networks private to decide who does or does not have access to your personal information.

CASe 3

A severe storm hits your community and there is a high probability that your home will be affected. Where are your documents located?

I don't know where my most important documents are.

I keep my documents in one place and they are in a laminated folder or backpack.

I have my documents in different places.

*We recommend having an emergency backpack that contains your documents along with other items you may need during an emergency.

You got it right!

Even though the heavy rain damaged your home, your most important documents are still in your hands without a scratch. Remember that it is vital to know where your documents are and in case of an emergency to have them in one place so that it is easier to take them with you.

case 4

IT'S ELECTORAL CAMPAIGN SEASON AND THEY OFFER YOUR COMMUNITY A DEVELOPMENT PROJECT - TO IMPLEMENT IT they ask you for a copy of YOUR VOTER'S CREDENTIAL. What do you do?

They have already carried out projects with the same demand so I decide to trust and give them the copy of my ID.

I investigate and I realise that they will use my INE for their political campaign, however, I want the project and give them the copy of my INE.

I investigate what my credential is going to be used for and discover that the project has nothing to do with my INE. So I decide not to hand over the copy of my ID.

I decide to hand over a copy of my INE without any prior investigation.

You got it right!

There are occasions when they will come to your community to advertise development projects, therefore it is vital to investigate whether they have an identifiable public position, as well as the transparency of the social campaign they are proposing. Demand that they provide you with a privacy notice and sign data protection documents.

case 5

You go to the bank and in order to open an account they will do a facial and fingerprint registration (biometric data). What do you do?

You reject it because you don't understand why it was implemented.

You visit CONDUSEF to find out what biometric data is and how banks use this information.

You accept it because you urgently need to open the account and you rely on what the bank tells you.

You agree because you think it is the only way to open the account.

You got it right!

For advice on the relation between biometric data and the use banks make of it, go to the CONDUSEF website where the purpose of biometric banking is explained. Click here!

CASe 6

You receive a call where you are offered a new phone package, to accept the offer you have to share your personal details, then you...

You do not reveal your personal details and go directly to the store to ask about the offer.

You agree to provide your personal data because you liked the offer.

You got it right!

You go to the store and they tell you that there is no such offer. The call was fraud. Remember that telephone scams are very common. They may offer you a credit card, a new product (such as a van) or service, or even warn you about unrecognised bank payments. Be on the alert and call the institution directly to make sure that the information is real.
