01

Getting your student's attention

3 TIPS to get your student's attention

1.

2.

3.

+ info

Doing a roll call

Sit and put down the equipment

+ info

Consistent keyword or signal to start and stop the activity

+ ifo

3 TIPS to get your student's attention

3. Sit down and put down the equipment

1. Doing a roll call

To avoid any distractions, all the students are in the same position --> no need for complete silence, except for safety rules

It is mendatory but is a source of distraction and accidents To avoid this, you should make them do something, or designate a group captain that is responsible to tell you if someone is missing in his group

2. Consistent signal or keyword

For example : Sonny during a microteaching used this : “if I have your attention, touch your head” and it worked really wellYou can also whistle, countdown from 5 to 1--> To start and stop the activity => always the same to be efficient You can use 'echoes' : the student repeat back the command while completing the action

02

Establishing class rules and handling conflicts

3 TIPS to help you establish some rules

1.

2.

3.

+ info

Involve the student in the construction of the rules

Gradation of the sanction

Not too many and associate with gesture to repeat them

+ info

+ ifo

3 TIPS to help you establish some rules

3. Gradate your sanctions

Guideline = say what you are going to do and do what you said • 1st step = warning • 2nd steps = refocus : student sit down on a bench and think about what he needs to do to change behavior + have a conversation with the teacher • 3rd step : note signed by the parents => To help you gradate, you can use “classroom screen” to put a timer, a traffic light

1. Involve the student in the construction of the rules

Take some time to let the student's establish the class rules (with the teacher's supervision) Then make a charter, make it signed by the parents and hang it on the wall

2. Not too many and associate with gesture

For example : "Respect yourself, the others, this place and equipment" Associate a movement to the basic rules : "when the teacher talks, students listen (show your ear)" ; when students want to ask something, they raise their hand (raise your hand) => Repeat + + and have the students repeat too

03

Group managment and activities

3 TIPS to help you manage your groups and activities

1.

2.

3.

+ info

Use different types of groups according to your situation

Don't waste time when you make groups

+ info

Use different type of tournament

+ ifo

3 TIPS to help you manage your groups and activities

1. Use different types of group

3. Use different types of tournaments

Friendship teams / affinity teams Homogeneous/level/needs teams Heterogeneous groups Families, for example : with animals, houses in Harry Potter => involve every student => Do small groups to make them talk in English => use social roles to dived the teacher’s attention and develop their skills

Knock out = elimination League / round robin / Berger system : every team plays against every team once even if looses Combination : pool / group / zonal basis + elimination Challenge : someone ask you to play against you and it is up to you to accept Multilevel : players are not eliminated but moves down one or more levels Extended : tournaments on several weeks/months

2. Don't waste time

Use strategies when you need to make groups so that it doesn’t take long For example : “Once you make eye contact that is your partner” to make teams of two

ZOOM on the different types of tournament

1) Knock out = elimination

4) Combination

2) League / Round Robin / Berger system = every one plays againts evryone

Knock out cum knock out : 4 teams of 4 -> the 4 winners play the finalLeague cum league : 4 teams of 4 play against every team and all the winners play against the 4 winners Knock-out cum league : knock out to select the winners of each team and in the final : league format, all the winners are playing against the other winners League cum knock-out : all the 4 players play against the other of the same group and the finalist are playing with elimination

  • Simple : for 6 teams = 15 matches
  • Double team = the best because students get a lot of chances to prove themselves = 30 matches
=> staircase / ladder method :
  • Single elimination : simple, number of students important, time short but half of the class eliminated quickly and wait
  • Double elimination : every strudents play at least two games

3) Challenge

04

Giving instructions

3 TIPS to help you give instructions

1.

2.

3.

+ info

The shorter the better

+ info

Use different media

Use ICQs to make sure they understood

+ ifo

3 TIPS to help you give instructions

Level up : for students with more experience : give them their activity and they have to ask the teacher some question about what they need to do to, they have to guess the task instructions --> don’t forget to recap before getting started

1. The shorter the better

Be concise, give the goal and criteria for sucess (plan what you want say) Give a time limit before you start the activity Give the equipment after explaining the rules to get 100% of their attention To introduce the equipment to your lesson : spread it around the teaching area and always engage the student’s activity once they have the equipment

3. ICQs (instruction checking questions)

To make sure they understood = Instructions Checking Question)  -> Don’t ask yes/no question because some will say yes to please you or because they are shy For example : What do you need to do first? --> explore the different steps, make them repaet the intructions When do you win? etc.

2. Use different media

Use sheets with keywords and drawings Use a demonstration (and not always you or the same student) Write the steps on the whiteboard Use your body language while you speak

05

HOW TO ASSESS YOUR STUDENTS

3 TIPS to help you assess your students

1.

2.

3.

+ info

Define & communicate 1 or 2 specific content

+ info

Use the formative assessment and FB to help them progress

Be fair !

+ ifo

3 TIPS to help you assess your students

1. Define and communciate

3. Be fair

Select what you want your students to learn and therefore what you want to assess. You mussn't ask too much of them, so you can reconsider your contents after the diagnostic assessment or several formative assessments You need to be clear with your students so that they know which skills and concepts they are assessed on It is important to give criteria for success

Being objective can be an issue, so you can use assessment grid that you will use for every students Do not assess the behavior Do not assess something you haven't seen in class before Set an objective that is reachable for everyone, with different levels on the same task.

2. Use the assessment to help them progress

A formative assessment can happen at any moment during the learning process It allows the students to practice before the summative assessement Use the formative assessment to give FB to help them progress, based on the results

06

Guidelines for your clil scenario

3 TIPS to guide you through a CLIL lesson

1.

2.

3.

+ info

Determine the level of your students in english

+ info

Keep in mind the learning goals

Use digital tools

+ ifo

3 TIPS to guide you through a CLIL lesson

1. Determine the level of your students in english

3. Use some digital tools

-> Plickers : + only the teacher has his phone- it is a lot of preparation and the student can easily cheat -> Classroom screen + there is a lot of different widget (stopwatch, traffic light, randomiser) according to what you are looking for - you need an electronic device to difuse it

2. Keep in mind the learning goals

In terms of motricity (do not leave the pratical time aside !!) In terms of langage : vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation In terms of social roles

Now, Let's plan a clil lesson !!
