BANNED BOOK PRESENTATION : WHERE'S WALLY?

"Where's Wally?" ("Where's Waldo?" in the U.S.) is a popular British series of children's puzzle books created by illustrator Martin Handford. The first book was published on 21 September 1987. In each book, readers are challenged to find Wally, a man who wears a distinct red-and-white striped jersey, a matching hat, and glasses. Waldo typically travels to lively and crowded everyday places, such as the beach or the zoo. The scenes are accompanied by postcards from Waldo to the reader, which introduce the scene and comment on his travels.

Why did it get banned, and where? A “Where’s Wally” book was the 87th most challenged book in the US in the 1990s, according to the American Library Association. The reason was because, on the right of a beach scene, a woman was drawn topless (her top probably fell off when she threw her back out because of a child who was assaulting her with a cone of ice cream). The 1.5 millimeter exposed breast first shocked a mother in New Hampshire in 1992.A few months later, another mother also discovered it after her 10-year-old son brought the book from school. As a result of their complaints, the book was removed from several schools and libraries, including Michigan public schools in 1989, and later a few New York libraries in 1993. It was also banned in Texas prisons in 2017.
