Hello! My name's Paul and I’m Jewish. Today, I want to share a very special story with you. It's the story of Hanukkah, also known as the 'festival of lights'. Let's find out why Hanukkah is so important and why it lasts for eight nights.

A long time ago, the Jewish people visited a place called the Temple on special occasions.

Oh no! How would you feel if you saw the Temple like this?
But one day, a group of people who didn’t like what they were doing came and took over the Temple. They made a mess of it, broke things and used up almost all of the oil that was needed to keep a special lamp called a menorah burning.

After some time, a small group of Jewish people called the Maccabees fought bravely to take back the Temple. Amazingly, the Maccabees managed to win the Temple back. Then they had to clean it up and make it special again so it could be used.
This is my favourite part of the story because it shows how brave the Maccabees were.

However, there was only a tiny bit of oil left - only enough to keep the menorah burning for one day. The Maccabees needed the menorah to stay alight all the time but they just did not have enough oil.

Then, something amazing happened. The little bit of oil did not burn out after one day. Instead, it lasted for eight days - long enough for the Maccabees to find more oil to keep the menorah alight. The Maccabees thought this was truly a miracle!
I think of this part of the Hanukkah story when I light my candles at home. It's amazing how the oil lasted for eight whole days!

Now it's time to celebrate! We'll light the hanukiah, which has nine candles or small oil lamps. We also enjoy eating food cooked in oil like potato pancakes, singing, playing games and giving presents.

Every year, Jewish people celebrate this special time and call it Hanukkah. For eight nights, people light candles to remember winning the Temple back and how the oil lasted for eight days.
