High Relief vs. Low Releif

High relief Sculpture: the sculpture comes out of the flat surface farther. Low Relief Sculpture: The sculpture is lower and closer to the flat surface.

What is Mixed Media?

When artists use more than one medium (material) in their artwork.

Harmony

Harmony is when the elements of art are arranged to make an artwork look complete.

Similar colors, patterns, and shapes create harmony (unity) in artwork.

Balance

The way an artist organizes a composition. There can be symmetrical or asymetrical balance.

Asymmetrical Balance

Symmetrical Balance

Composition is not the same on both sies, but has similar amounts of elements throughout.

Composition is the same on both sides.

Positive Space:

The subject or objects that take up room in an image.

Negative Space:

The area around or in between the objects in an image

Positive and Negative Space

NEGATIVE SPACE

Space is absent of any object

POSITIVE SPACE

Object is taking up space

What is Notan?

A Japanese word that means light-dark harmony.

Have you heard of this black and white symbol?

Synthesis and organization, the two pillars of presentation

We are visual beings. We can understand images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.

Step 1

Narrative beings. We tell thousands and thousands of stories. ⅔ of our conversations are stories.

Step 2

Social beings. We need to interact with one another. We learn in a collaborative way.

Step 3

Digital beings. We avoid being part of the content overload in the digital world.
