Headed by the president, this branch enforces laws. The president also serves as the commander-in-chief of the military, negotiates treaties, and can veto legislation passed by Congress.
Judicial Branch (Supreme Court and lower courts)
This branch interprets laws and ensures they are applied fairly. It has the power to declare laws or executive actions unconstitutional, acting as a check on the other branches.
Legislative Branch (Congress)
This branch, made up of the Senate and House of Representatives, is responsible for making laws. Congress also has the power to approve budgets, declare war, and impeach officials.
The Link between the checks and balance system and the elctions.
The checks and balances system is closely linked to U.S. elections as it ensures that no single branch of government has too much power in the election process. For instance, while the executive branch (president) enforces laws and oversees federal elections, the legislative branch (Congress) has the power to regulate elections and certify results. Meanwhile, the judicial branch (courts) can intervene in disputes, ensuring elections are fair, as seen in cases like Bush v. Gore in 2000. This balance ensures that election outcomes cannot be manipulated by one branch alone.
