In 1816 Constable married Maria Bicknell, after much opposition from her father. Maria suffered from tuberculosis, so they lived in north London because it was healthier than the central London. His marriage was happy and they had seven children. Constable loved painting locations he knew well, particularly in his native Suffolk. He made numerous studies of the clouds. Maria's death in 1828 was devastating for Constable. The following year he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy and became famous in England and in France: he had a profound influence on French romantic artists. Constable died in London on 31 March 1837.
